Today, developers, builders, and real estate owners are among the nation's richest people and a growing number of them are turning to philanthropy. As in our other donor categories, please note that while most of these real estate fortunes were amassed by men, spouses frequently drive and shape the family's philanthropy. Thomas Barrack moves philanthropy through the Thomas J. Barrack Family Foundation, an entity that in recent years has had negligible assets and made zero grants. Barrack is a major benefactor of his alma mater USC.

Bruce Beal and his wife Kathryn move philanthropy through the Beal Family Foundation, whose grantmaking prioritizes New York City.

Alberto Beeck and his wife Olga move their philanthropy through the Alberto and Olga Maria Beeck Foundation, which gave away around $2 million in a recent year. Earlier in the decade, the couple made a big $10 million gift to Olga’s alma mater Georgetown University.

DONALD BREN

Funding areas include education, conservation, and various fields of research. Major gifts include $40 million to an enrichment program in the Irvine (California) Unified School District and $20 million to University of California Irvine Law School. 

WARREN L. BRESLOW

The CEO of Goldrich and Kest and family fund Jewish causes, health and human services, arts and culture, and education and youth. Los Angeles is a frequent region of giving.

ROBERT E. BUCHANAN

The Buchanan family’s philanthropy does not appear to have a sharp focus but several recent grants have gone to environmental organizations. The mid-Atlantic states and Oregon are areas of giving.

Denise LeFrak Calicchio recently founded the Denise LeFrak Foundation. She serves on several key boards, particularly in the New York City arts scene. She's also given big gifts with the rest of the LeFrak family and moves giving through the Samuel J. and Ethel LeFrak Charitable Trust, which gives to quite a range of causes.

Gary and Patricia Holloway conduct philanthropy through the recently-minted Gary M. and Patricia P. Holloway Family Foundation, which gave away $924,000 in a recent year. Grantmaking focuses on the Philadelphia area. The couple support their mutual alma mater Villanova University. Healthcare is another interest.

RAY AND NANCY HUNT

Ray Hunt, his wife Nancy, and family move their philanthropy through several philanthropic vehicles, focusing strongly on their Texas community. The Nancy Ann Hunt and Ray L. Philanthropic Fund’s grantmaking has been modest of late. The Nah Foundation and The Nancy Ann Hunt Foundation, the most well-endowed vehicle, focus on causes like education and health.

WOODY AND GAYLE HUNT

Funding interests include healthcare, education, arts and culture, human services, and economic development. Grants concentrate on the Paso del Norte region, comprising El Paso County, TX, Doña Ana County, NM, Otero County, NM, and Cuidad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

ISAAC AND RACHEL JACOBOWITZ

Jacobowitz focuses his philanthropy on Jewish causes, particularly in Brooklyn.

CHRISTOPHER AND LISA JEFFRIES

Christopher and Lisa Jeffries, and their family, conduct their philanthropy through the Jeffries Family Foundation, which appears to be recently minted, and has given modestly. Jeffries has supported his alma mater University of Michigan.

Roger Rieger and his wife Annette founded the Tudor Foundation, which provides funding in support of programs that assist at-risk children in the Seattle Public schools. The couple have also given millions to their mutual alma mater University of Kansas.

JONATHAN F.P. AND DIANA ROSE

Through their Lostand Foundation, the Roses fund causes in social action, land conservation, sustainable development, arts and culture, and education and youth. They also help steer the arts-and-culture-focused Frederick P and Sandra P Rose Foundation.
