Gary and Lark Young

NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Polygon Northwest Company

FUNDING AREAS: Human Services, Education, Community

OVERVIEW: Gary and Lark Young conduct philanthropy through the Young Family Foundation, which gave away $185,000 to organizations in the state of Washington in a recent year. The Youngs, via their foundation, focus on human services organizations.

BACKGROUND: Gary Young was an executive with Polygon Northwest Company, a homebuilder in the Seattle and Portland areas. The company sold to William Lyon Homes for $520 million in cash. Young keeps an exceptionally low profile.

ISSUES:

HUMAN SERVICES: The Youngs are involved with Food Lifeline, which collects quality surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores and food manufacturers, and then distributes it through a network of some 300 food banks. Other grantees include Eastside Baby Corner; FareStart, which works in job placement; LifeWire, which deals with domestic violence; and Life Enrichment Options (LEO), “a community based non-profit organization that advocates for and works to support individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve their goals through supportive housing, recreation, employment opportunities and community education.”

EDUCATION: The family has recently supported Rainier Scholars.

COMMUNITY: The Youngs earmark funds for Seattle community organizations such as Seattle Humane Society and the Unity of Bellevue church.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Youngs have kept a low profile and haven’t said much publicly about their giving, as far as we can tell. Expect human services to remain a strong interest, however.
