Diane Kemper

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Solil Management

FUNDING AREAS: Education, Health, Mental Health, Environment

OVERVIEW:  Diane Kemper has conducted philanthropy through the Diane Goldman Fund, though the current status of the charity is unclear. Her daughter Robin is a trustee of the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, a charitable vehicle of the larger Goldman clan which bears the name of Kemper's late mother, Lillian.

BACKGROUND: Diane Kemper is one of four Goldman siblings who co-own Solil Management, which owns at least 400 properties in New York City and was started by her late father Sol. She worked in the real estate office but has recently scaled back.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The family has supported Georgetown University, Americans for Oxford (though Diane's husband Kenneth D. Kemper studied law at Cambridge), Purdue University, Columbia University, and Yale, via the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust. Yale looms large in the Goldman clan: its law library is named after Lillian, and they created a $10 million endowed professorship. Robin, a lawyer, graduated from Yale Law School.

HEALTH: Columbia University is home to the Diane Goldman Kemper Family Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry. Mental health issues have touched the family. Cancer is also a personal interest: matriarch Lillian passed away from pancreatic cancer. Grantees have included Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

CONSERVATION: Diane's sister Amy lives on a 200-acre farm in Rhinebeck, New York, and is a gardener, author and artist. She is also a vice chair of New York Botanical Garden, which she and her family steadily support. Other grantees include Temperate Orchard Conservancy and Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies.

POLICY: Grantees include Democracy North Carolina.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Goldman family are running a robust philanthropic operation and with billions on hand should be watched for even greater giving.
