Funding Trends

Philanthropy for women’s and girl’s causes encompasses multiple funding interests both in the United States and abroad.

While grantmaking for women and girls is often conducted through a gender lens, work is necessarily intersectional. Related topics include a high-profile push to address systemic gender inequity, violence, sex trafficking, the effects of mass incarceration on women, intersectional movement-building, gender justice, an imperative to involve men in movement building and equity efforts, and, perennially, women’s rights and access to reproductive choices. Funding for women and girls often overlaps with giving for public health, human rights, violence prevention, economic development, and climate change justice, among other areas.

Private and family foundations like the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and the Ford Foundation are among the most prominent reproductive healthcare funders.

Their giving also reflects the largest segment of giving interest in the women and girls nonprofit space. Giving here includes significant rights and advocacy work for nonprofits working around the world to support a woman’s right to choose, family planning and maternal and perinatal health.

Some corporate funding for women and girls nonprofits tends to concentrate on programmatic concerns like STEM education, economic inclusion and entrepreneurship. In recent years, it appears that financial institutions have often supported economic empowerment initiatives, while Tech moguls back STEM inclusion. Increasingly, women’s foundations, funds and giving circles — like the Women Donors Network and the Women Moving Millions — play an essential role in accelerating support for women and girls.
