PROFILE: Established in 1979, the Yampa Valley Community Foundation (YVCF) is a community foundation based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Local citizens created the foundation initially to save the Yampa Valley College from financial issues. Today, the foundation administers approximately 150 funds. The foundation “provides leadership in raising funds, in partnership with community members, to support innovative programs benefiting the Yampa Valley community.” It funds local efforts for arts and culture, education, health, human services, environment and recreation..

The Yampa Valley Community Foundation supports a variety of different nonprofits at the local level. For the community grant cycle each year, a foundation grant committee made up of local community volunteers and YVCF board members and trustees researches and analyzes grant proposals. There are other grants available outside of this grant cycle, including donor-recommended grants, giving circles and designated funds. For example, the WZ Giving Circle supports needs in Routt County, the Women’s Giving Circle of YVCF supports the needs of women, children and the elderly. Yampa Valley Gives is a donation event to support local nonprofits.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $15,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Northwest Colorado. Past local grantees include the Craig Concert Association, Reach Out and Read Colorado and Rocky Mountain Down Syndrome Association.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. For community grants, the grant cycle typically opens in May, and applications are due in June. Nonprofits must have requests for general operating support approved by foundation staff in advance of submitting an application. YVCF uses an online grant application system.
