What the Marino Family Charitable Foundation Supports in California

In 2012, Gary and Gail Marino created their own family foundation after being inspired by their daughter, who was born with Down syndrome. This is a niche funder that prioritizes California nonprofits serving people with the condition and their families.

Here are a few things to know about the Marino Family Charitable Foundation (MFCF) for groups looking to approach this foundation with a grant request.

A primary focus on Down syndrome

MFCF is primarily focused on benefiting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. However, it considers supporting various other fields as they relate to this population group, which makes up approximately one in every 700 babies born each year.

The foundation often provides grants in education and health. It prefers to provide ongoing program support rather than funding for capital projects or building repairs. Most grants are between $5,000 and $35,000 each.

Geographic interests

Although MFCF describes itself as a national nonprofit organization, it has a few specific geographic interests. Over the years, grantmaking has been concentrated in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as Boca Raton, Florida.

Southern California grantees include Club 21 Learning & Resource Center in Pasadena and the Down Syndrome Foundation of Orange County in Newport Beach. Northern California grantees include the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area in Danville and Via Rehabilitation Services in Santa Clara.

How to apply

Wells Fargo Philanthropic Services manages MFCF, and grantseekers must submit grant applications through its website. The bank offers a straightforward and accessible online application process. Simply create an account on Wells Fargo’s website to complete and submit an application with a registered email address and password.

Although MFCF accepts grant applications throughout the year, grantseekers must submit their requests by June 30 for the foundation to review them by the end of the year. Once they’ve applied, applicants receive an automated email confirming their submission.
