PROFILE: Established in 1986, the van Beuren Charitable Foundation is the foundation ofJohn A. “Archie” and Hope H. “Happy” van Beuren. It is based in Newport, Rhode Island and gives locally to the communities here. The foundation aims to “invest in the quality of life and quality of place of Aquidneck Island and surrounding communities.” To accomplish this, the van Beuren Charitable Foundation awards grants for education, health, community, and local landscapes and buildings.

The foundation’s education grants focus on providing children with a strong start in both life and education. The funder awards healthy lifestyle grants to organizations that improve access to healthcare and create positive environments for residents. Community prosperity grants go towards regional economic growth and building a skilled, local workforce. Finally, the van Beuren’s Excellence in the Commons grantmaking focuses on improving the quality of landscapes and buildings that support the vitality of Rhode Island communities.

Foundation grants typically range from $25,000 to $100,000. Grantseekers can view a list of past grants on the Grants page of the foundation’s website. Geographically, the foundation restricts grantmaking to Aquidneck Island and Newport County, Rhode Island. There are two grant cycles per year. A majority of grants go towards project or program support, as general operating support is only occasionally provided to long-term grant partners.

This foundation accepts grant proposals in the spring and fall of each year. Therefore, the grant application deadlines are February 15 and June 1. Grantseekers must submit applications through the foundation’s online system, and there are separate applications for program/project support and major construction renovation/capital campaign support. Direct all general questions to the staff at 401-619-5910 or to the grants and business manager, Kim Dame, at kdame@vbcfoundation.org.
