True Colors Trust: Grants for Global Health

OVERVIEW: True Colors Trust focuses its global health funding on palliative care for children and adults in Africa.

IP TAKE: This is an approachable funder that prefers to offer project-specific support rather than grants for general operating costs. Grant seekers should be aware that True Colors awards small grants, and may be best suited for smaller, local, and grassroots groups.

PROFILE: The True Colors Trust is one of the 17 nonprofits that belong to the Sainsbury Family of Charitable Trusts. True Colors operates as a separate legal entity, but it may share some administration with other Sainsbury nonprofits.

Grants for Global Health

True Colors Trust's global health program is focused on palliative care in Africa. The program seeks to improve access to "[a]ffordable palliative care for adults and children in Africa;" prioritizing the "[n]eed for appropriate pain relief;" and integration of palliative care services into established health systems. The trust ultimately believes that African children and adults suffering from life-limiting illnesses should have access to affordable palliative care. It awards £500 to £5,000 for equipment purchases, palliative care for children, medicines, capital improvements, access to palliative care in rural regions, and training courses.

True Colors supports large organizations such as the African Palliative Care Association and the International Children’s Palliative Care Network. It also oversees a small grant program.

Grants also fund work that addresses children’s hearing loss and hearing impairment in Northern Uganda.

The trust accepts unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding. Trustees meet twice yearly to make grant decisions.
