The Saturday Club: Grants for Philadelphia

OVERVIEW: The Saturday Club is a women’s group that provides annual grants to organizations in Greater Philadelphia that support local women, children, and families.

IP TAKE:  This funder is hyper-local and supports women and girls in the region. Grants are not large, but this is an influential community of women that nonprofits will want to know.

PROFILE: Established in 1886, The Saturday Club is a women’s group that serves the Greater Philadelphia area through grantmaking and volunteerism. When The Saturday Club was formed in the 19th century it was a radical concept for women to meet outside the home and form their own club. But it is groups like this that have paved the way for the growing movement of women’s giving circles in modern philanthropy. Today, the club supports local organizations through charitable donations and serves as a networking group for members. It aims to “to improve the lives of women, children, and families in the greater Philadelphia region.” Grantmaking areas of interest include women, children, and families.

In recent years, The Saturday Club has awarded about five grants annually at its spring membership meeting. All of these funds have supported women, children, and families in the Greater Philadelphia area. The group is based in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Past grantees include the Community Center at Visitation, Greener Partners, Milagro House, Paws and Affection, and The Parkesburg Point Youth Center.

The grants awarded are typically between $500 and $3,000 each. Grantseekers can view a list of past grantees on the funder’s website.  To be eligible for a grant, nonprofits must serve women, children, and families in the Philadelphia area. The women’s group partners with Philadelphia area nonprofits to determine the best ways to help. Sometimes this is through grants, and other times it is by volunteering time and conducting needs drives. Other activities include a 5K race, bingo events, holiday markets, youth programs, and talent shows. The Saturday Club also makes in-kind donations for the use of its clubhouse.

This funder accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits. Grant applications are typically due in January of each year, and it announces new grant awards in April. In the past, grants were awarded twice per year. Nonprofits must send grant applications to the funder via mail, and it is necessary to provide 10 copies of the application form with a submission. The funder appreciates duplicate copies of supporting documents as well. Grant seekers should direct questions to the philanthropy committee at 610-688-9746 or via online form.
