The Hickey Family Foundation: Grants for Global Health

OVERVIEW: The Hickey Foundation supports global health organizations that address significant global health concerns related to pervasive diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. The foundation also makes grants to support health care capacity building efforts.

IP TAKE: Hickey seeks global health projects that make a significant contribution to the health and well-being of local communities in its geographic areas of interest. This foundation funds both small and large organizations that work in the global health space; however, it also sometimes awards past grantees multiple-year funding, thus making it more challenging for new grant seekers to secure funding.

This small funder does not have the capacity to accept unsolicited applications. If you want to learn more about how it invites organizations to apply, contact them directly. They are approachable, but it may take some time to hear back due to limited staff.

As well, this modest funder’s website is sparse, so its giving appears broad on the surface, but know that giving is solely centered on its stated priorities.

PROFILE: Entrepreneur and businessman Frank Hickey was involved in philanthropy for decades before establishing the Hickey Family Foundation in 2004. The foundation seeks to support “rescue of youth projects,” “medical technology development projects,” and “medical training center development projects.” In his early philanthropic years, Hickey served on the boards of several charitable organizations that serviced the health care needs of vulnerable populations both domestically and internationally.

Grants for Global Health

Dedicated to global health, the foundation aims to “[f]inance the establishment of medical training centers or clinics where no or inadequate medicine exists.” To those ends, Hickey makes grants to organizations that address significant global health concerns related to diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. The foundation also supports NGOs that train community health workers, including nurses, doctors and medical support staff.

Important Grant Details:

The Hickey Family Foundation does not award many annual grants. One-third of its grantmaking funds global health organizations. The foundation does not accept unsolicited applications.
