OVERVIEW: Steven Mnuchin conducts philanthropy through the Steven and Heather Mnuchin Foundation (Heather being his ex-wife), which according to available tax filings, gave away around $580,000 in2018. He has supported education and health organizations, with a focus on Los Angeles and New York.

BACKGROUND: Born in 1962 in New York City, Steven Mnuchin graduated from Yale University in 1985 and joined Goldman Sachs, where he worked for nearly two decades. Mnuchin rose to CIO at Goldman Sachs. After Goldman, he worked for and founded several hedge funds. He has also worked as a Hollywood financier and founded Dune Entertainment. In 2017, Mnuchin was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Trump.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Mnuchin supports Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, which he graduated from, The John Thomas Dye School. He has also made several donations to UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. He has also given support to organizatiosn like Prep for Prep and the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include UCLA Medical Center, Venice Family Clinic, Cedars SinaiProstate Cancer Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Mnuchin recently married Louise Linton, an actress, whose mother passed away from breast cancer. 

ARTS & CULTURE: Mnuchin has supported MOCAMotion Picture & Television Fund, and Yellowstone Art Museum.

JEWISH CAUSES: Mnuchin was born into a Jewish family and through his foundation has supported Temple Emanu-El, Park East Synagogue, and Kehillat Israel, a synagogue in Los Angeles.  He has also given to Jewish groups like JA Worldwide and Facing History and Ourselves.

LOOKING FORWARD: It remains to be seen how Mnuchin’s new wife Louise will influence his philanthropy going forward. Louise once volunteered in Africa and has written, with considerable controversy, about her experiences. Perhaps the couple's giving will include a global component. Given Mnuchin's role in government, policy is another possibility.
