IP TAKE: Grant seekers who get in touch with this funder should play off its increasing interests in career advancement and financial empowerment. These have been priorities with the SoCalGas community team lately.

PROFILE: SoCalGas is a regulated subsidiary of Sempra Energy, a Fortune 500 energy company based in San Diego. It seeks to improve “the quality of life in the communities we serve.” The company’s beginnings date back to 1867 when Los Angeles Gas Co. installed gas lamps in downtown L.A. Today, its service territory covers about 20,000 square miles in Central and Southern California, from Visalia to the Mexican border. This is where SoCalGas focuses its corporate grantmaking.

Grantmaking interests include: education, workforce development, environment, active military, veterans, emergency preparedness, safety, economic and business development. Career advancement and financial empowerment have been key issues for this corporate funder.

In Los Angeles, SoCalGas prioritizes STEM education and has supported groups like the East Los Angeles Community Union, the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers, and the Los Angeles Education Partnership. SoCalGas’ work in protecting and preserving the environment covers issues like urban green space, clean air initiatives, and beach cleanups. This support has come in the form of employee cleanup activities, essay contests, workshops, and grants for innovative conservation projects.

The company is committed to hiring and retaining military veterans, active military personnel, and veterans with disabilities. Its employees also participate in fundraiser walks, and the foundation has given grants to make services more accessible to military families.

SoCalGas has regularly partnered with United Way of Greater Los Angeles to award grants to help needy customers pay gas bills and join walks to end homelessness. This focus is heavily centered on employees giving back and walks to raise awareness. SoCalGas has supported the American Red Cross, elementary schools, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and other groups working to promote emergency preparedness and safety in Southern California.

SoCalGas does not appear to accept unsolicited requests for funding, nor does it outline a clear way to get in touch with grant-related inquiries. General correspondence can be directed to Southern California Gas Company, P.O. Box 3150, San Dimas, CA 91773.
