Sheldon H. Solow Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The Sheldon H. Solow Foundation's grantmaking includes support of arts and Jewish organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low profile but a recent 990 did indicate that it accepts unsolicited proposals. Solow gives to a similar handful of grantees annually, meaning first-timers may have an uphill battle.

FUNDING AREAS: Arts & Culture, Health, Jewish Causes, Education & Youth, Environment

PROFILE: Founded in 1987, the Sheldon H. Solow Foundation was established by the late New York real estate billionaire mogul Sheldon Solow. The family moves their philanthropy through several vehicles. The Sheldon H. Solow Foundation is the second oldest vehicle related to the Solows, and its grantmaking includes support of the arts as well as Jewish causes.

Sheldon Solow got his start in real estate in the early 1970s, when he built a 50-story office building at 9 West 57th Street called the Solow Building. Solow was CEO of Solow Realty & Development and an affiliated company, Solow Management.

Grantees have included NYU (Sheldon Solow attended the school), Hospital for Special Surgery, MoMA, The Met, Stony Brook Foundation, UJA Federation, Hebrew Public Charter Schools, and The Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation, whose mission is to "preserve the Georgica Pond ecosystem for future generations through science-based, watershed-wide policy and restoration on Long Island."

In a recent tax year, the foundation gave away $270,000. Per a recent 990, the foundation does accept unsolicited proposals. There is no submission deadline or specific form required.
