PROFILE: The Seed the Dream Foundation was established by Joel Greenberg, founder of the Susquehanna investment and equity trading group, and his wife, Marcy Gringlas. Based in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, this foundation supports education exclusively. Its three initiatives are educational access, which funds schools, music and arts education and scholarship programs; educational engagement, which supports young adults' study of and engagement with Israel; and educational awareness, which promotes Holocaust education and empowers survivors of the Holocaust to share their stories with younger generations.

Grants for K-12 Education

The foundation supports K-12 education mainly through its educational access initiative, which aims to expand access to high quality education in underserved communities. Grantees include charter schools in the greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area and in Israel. In the area of music and arts education, the program has supported Play on, Philly, an afterschool music program in Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, which partners with area charter schools to create public art works in the spirit of urban revitalization. Seed the Dream has also supported the Rift Valley Children's Village, an orphanage in Tanzania, and the construction of a school on the village site.

Grants for Higher Education

The Seed the Dream Foundation’s Educational Engagement initiatives support “educational initiatives that engage young people in meaningful interactions with Israel and Israelis.” It is a supporter of Birthright Israel, which sponsors visits to Israel for young Jews around the world. In partnership with Birthright, it launched the Building Israel Connections Engagement Project, which focuses on “enriching trip preparation, enhancing the participant experience in Israel, and delivering post-trip engagement.” It also supports Inside IL, which helps business students in the United States network with Israeli companies.

Grants for Jewish Causes

As part of its educational efforts, Seed the Dream's educational awareness program is committed to educating young people about the history of the Holocaust. It coordinates lessons and programs that “work to integrate lessons on contemporary antisemitism meaningfully into Holocaust Education” for middle and high school students in the U.S. and Israel. It also supports Survivor Services that help provide access to financial and health assistance for aging Holocaust survivors, preserve their memories and records of the Holocaust, and connect them with programs to educate future generations of youth.
