PROFILE: The Robert Sterling Clark Foundation was created in 1952 by Clark, whose father helped popularize the Singer sewing machine in the 1800s. The foundation seeks to help “create and sustain a vibrant New York City.” It funds some theater and the performing arts through its Leadership and Network Development program, although this is just a very small fraction of total grants in this area.
The Leadership and Network Development program seeks to invest “in the potential of people […] to build a stronger New York City.” The program prioritizes “issue- or identity-focused programs that are cohort-based that have sustained contact over a period of time.”
Past arts grants include EmcArts for general operating costs and professional development; Cultures in Harmony; the International Foundation for Art Research; and the Latino International Theater Festival of New York.
