Redlich Horwitz Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Redlich Horwitz Foundation supports improvements to the foster care system in the state of New York.

FUNDING AREAS: Foster care in New York

IP TAKE: This funder has really been into collaborative partnerships with other local funders lately, but it steadily supports government agencies too.

PROFILE: Established in 1986, the Redlich Horwitz Foundation is the family foundation of Catherine Redlich and Robert Horwitz. Catherine Redlich co-founded Driscoll & Redlich, a criminal litigation and regulatory law firm. Robert Horwitz started the high-yield bond department at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, co-founded several medical device companies, and formed the investment management firm of RH Capital Associates. The foundation aims to “increase and improve family-based care and to reduce time to permanency for all children in the foster care system in New York.” Grantmaking is exclusively focused on improving the foster care system in New York.

This foundation’s grant process begins with an initial meeting or phone call, followed by the submission of a concept note upon invitation. The foundation conducts an initial review, requests a full application, and finally evaluates that application to choose new grantees. This funder supports knowledge building, public/private partnerships, policy reform, direct services, and philanthropic partnerships as part of it strategy.

Foundation grants tend to range from $50,000 to $500,000, and grants are typically for multiple years. Nonprofits can view a list of past grantees on the funder’s sample grants page. Grantmaking is restricted to the state of New York. The funder awards grants to produce reports, organize convenings, fund RFPs for counties and provider agencies, support grassroots voices, and scale county data systems.

The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited grant requests from New York nonprofits. Grantseekers can direct general questions to the foundation staff at 646-586-3337 or info@rhfdn.org.
