Rattner Family Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The Rattner Family Foundation’s grantmaking includes support of policy and global organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

FUNDING AREAS: Policy & Global, Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Health, Religious

PROFILE: Established in 1989, the Rattner Family Foundation was founded by private equity investor Steven Rattner and his wife Maureen, the former national finance chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.  Steven Rattner served as “car czar” during the Obama Administration. His wife, Maureen, meanwhile, has been active in politics for years, including serving as the Senior Advisor on Humanitarian Issues in the Office of the Special Representation to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the U.S. Department of State. She’s currently a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University.

The Rattner family foundation does not maintain a website or name grantmaking programs; however, tax filings suggest an interest in policy and global organizations.

In a recent fiscal year, grants ranged from $100 to $250,000. Past grantees include International Rescue Committee (Maureen is on the board), Columbia University, Public Theater, The New York Public Library, Church of St Ignatius Loyola, and International Women's Health Coalition.

Tax filings do not indicate whether it accepts unsolicited applications; however, given it's lack of transparency, it's clear that it does not.
