Rachel and Drew Katz Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Rachel and Drew Katz Foundation supports a wide range of disease-related organizations around the United States.

IP TAKE: The foundation prioritizes large, national organizations over small and local ones. Local groups will not find much fertile ground here. This space is crowded and often won out by established organizations that can scale quickly. It’s not particularly accessible, but it is approachable, so reach out to them if you have questions about how it chooses what to fund.

PROFILE: Established in 2003, the Rachel and Drew Katz Foundation was created by Drew Katz, CEO of Interstate Outdoor Advertising. It seeks “to make a difference in the lives of those in our community, and our world, by leveraging our expertise, creativity, resources and passions, to create infinite possibilities and opportunities for those in need.” Formerly known as the Drew A. Katz Foundation, it rebranded to its current name in 2015 to mark the Katzes’ two-year wedding anniversary. Drew Katz is the son of Lewis Katz, who was former co-owner of the New Jersey Nets, the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Rachel Katz is a former pro bono attorney in New York whose work focused on helping undocumented youth. This funder does not have specific focus areas, but broadly addresses “challenging areas, including, but not limited to, organizations addressing medical, educational, social, emotional, and cultural needs of those less fortunate.”

Grants for Diseases and Public Health

While the Katz Foundation does not have a specific disease program, it broadly supports cancer research and diverse disease-related groups across the United States. Its grants often support national organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and the Wilson Disease Association. In 2020, it made significant contributions to the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, whose board Drew Katz serves on.

Grants for K-12 Education and Community Development

The Katz Foundation supports organizations dedicated to youth development and education. It particularly funds charter schools in New Jersey such as the Katz Dalsey Academy, which was created with help from the foundation, and Camden’s Promise Charter School, as well as public schools in the area, including Camden High School, which received a substantial donation for a new scoreboard. It also supports groups that offer mentoring and other kinds of out-school-support, such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Grand Settlement, and Covenant House, which works to take in and protect homeless children.
