Point Foundation

Point Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Point Foundation offers scholarships to LGBTQ students across the country.

IP TAKE: Point offers scholarships on a “last provider” basis. This means that its funding is meant to help make up for funding shortfalls left by other means such as loans, work study programs and financial aid. The foundation generally accepts applications for its scholarships between November 1 and January 28 each year.

PROFILE: Founded in 2001 by Bruce Lindstrom and Carl Strickland, the Point Foundation is the country’s “[l]argest scholarship granting organization” focusing on LGBTQ students. Based in Los Angeles, the foundation aims to empower LGBTQ students to “[a]chieve their full academic and leadership potential—despite the obstacles often put before them—to make a significant impact on society.”

The foundation’s scholarship program, which strictly funds LGBTQ students, is available to students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States. To qualify, students must have a track record of strong academic achievement, financial need and involvement in community services, especially work with LGBTQ people and communities. The foundation also runs a Community College Program for students pursuing degrees at community colleges and vocational schools.

The Point Foundation accepts applications for its scholarships between November 1 and January 28 of each year. For additional information about eligibility, see the foundation’s eligibility and requirements page. General inquiries may be addressed to the foundation’s staff via email.
