Paul M. Angell Family Foundation: Grants for Chicago

OVERVIEW: The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation focuses grantmaking on preserving the world’s oceans and on performing arts and social causes in the Chicago area.

IP TAKE: Chicago groups have the best chance with Angell’s “social causes” grants. Pitch a cause related to early childhood education, teen pregnancy prevention, school completion for at-risk youth, workforce preparedness or African-American male achievement. This funder accepts applications through its online system.

PROFILE: Established in 2011 to honor Paul M. Angell, the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation is based in Chicago. Angell was born in Michigan in the late 19th century and grew up in Iowa. After serving in the Navy during World War I, he joined his father in the construction business and founded a firm to make ice cream cake rolls, a novelty food item at that time. The firm was called Newly Wed Foods, Inc., and it expanded to 10 countries and 25 manufacturing facilities. Angell passed away in 1984. This family foundation aims to “advance society through the performing arts, conservation of the world’s oceans, and alleviation of poverty.” Grantmaking areas of interest are marine ecosystem conservation, classical music, theater, early childhood education, teen pregnancy prevention, school completion for at-risk youth, workforce preparedness and African-American male achievement.

Recent grantmaking in Chicago has focused on social causes and the alleviation of poverty in urban areas. The foundation has demonstrated a strong interest in programs that promote early intervention and prevention strategies. Past Chicago grantees include Braven, the Association House of Chicago and the Bright Promises Foundation, which works in the area of early social and emotional learning. Angell’s performing arts prioritize classical music and theater. Chicago arts grantees include the Red Orchid Theatre, Artemisia, Bella Voce and Camerata Chicago.

Grants generally range between $15,000 and $100,000. Grantseekers can view lists of past grants by cycle in the funder’s online grants database. Chicago is a top area of focus for this funder.

The Paul M. Angell Foundation accepts unsolicited grant inquiries from nonprofits. Grantseekers can create an account online and complete a letter of inquiry application for one of the three priority areas. There are two grant cycles each year, as LOIs open up in mid-October for the spring cycle and in mid-March for the fall cycle.
