Pascale Sykes Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Pascale Sykes Foundation supports intergenerational families, low-income working families, and the well-being of children and youth in New Jersey and New York.

FUNDING AREAS: Strengthening families, low-income working families, children and youth

IP TAKE: This foundation will only be around a little while longer, so it will be difficult for unaffiliated grantseekers to get involved during this sunsetting phase.

PROFILE: Established in 1992, the Pascale Sykes Foundation (PSF) is based in Red Bank and Vineland, New Jersey. This funder supports low-income working families to improve their integrity, well-being, and wellbeing. The funder supports “programs targeting low-income families with at least one actual or potential wage earner and those involving open, voluntary enrollment.” Grantmaking areas of interest are Strengthening families, low-income working families, and children and youth.

PSF supports programs that focus on the intergenerational unit and that aim to have two family caregivers to support children. Overall, the funder prioritizes long-term and flexible programs. It also focuses its giving on prevention rather than dealing with crises. It relies upon a “Whole Family Approach” as a holistic way of supporting families who are doing their best to succeed. Public transportation in South Jersey and small entrepreneurial businesses in South Jersey are other interest areas.

Current grant amounts are variable because the foundation is spending down its assets and plans to close its doors in 2022 or 2023. Past grantees for traditional grants include the Fiver Children’s Foundation in New York and NJLEEP in Newark. Whole Family Approach grant recipients include the Child Connection Center and Connecting Families to Communities. PSF focuses its giving on the New Jersey counties of Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem. Southern New Jersey grants go only towards collaborations. In Manhattan, South Bronx, and Central New Jersey, the funder limits grantmaking to collaborations and agencies coordinating with other agencies.

In 2020, the Pascale Sykes Foundation pledged $10 million for THRIVE South Jersey to support small businesses and nonprofits affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the foundation is spending down and plans to close soon, it only accepts grant proposals from current grantees for renewal support. Grant seekers should direct general questions to the staff at GeneralMailBox@pascalesykesfoundation.com or call the Red Bank office at 732-747-2807 or the Vineland office at 856-213-5068.
