Panaphil Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Panaphil Foundation is not a large grantmaker. While the foundation does not name specific areas of grantmaking interest, its grants support organizations that work to help vulnerable populations receive quality healthcare, conservation, and women.

IP TAKE: Panaphil has a virtually non-existent public profile and it does not accept unsolicited requests for funding, which makes it more challenging for grant seekers to attract the foundation’s attention. Grant seekers should plan on networking with the foundation in order to better attract its grantmaking attentions. This is not a transparent or particularly approachable funder, but contact them at the number provided below to learn more about how they are currently deciding what to fund.

The good news here is that Panaphil often provides grantees with unrestricted support.

PROFILE: The Panaphil Foundation was established in 1990 in both New York and Pennsylvania. Despite the foundation’s lack of public information regarding its grantmaking, tax filings reveal that it focuses on giving to environmental preservation, conservation causes and large international health organizations that work globally in underdeveloped regions.

Grants for Global Health

Panaphil’s global health-related grants typically support large international groups working with disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. The foundation does not make many global health grants each year, so grant seekers should expect plenty of competition. Grantmaking is also very broad in order to consider a wider range of organizations to fund.

There’s also an emphasis here on women’s reproductive health, but that fund tends to serve the U.S., not the international stage.

Grants for Environmental, Marine and Wildlife Conservation

As with all of the foundation’s funding, Panaphil’s grants for conservation are purposefully broad. Tax filings reveal a particular focus on wildlife conservation, oceans, turtles, and related conservation interests. Past conservation grantees include the Land Trust Alliance, Ocean Conservancy, Environmental Defense Fund, ClientEarth US, Earthjustice, World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace Fund and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, among many others. There seems to be an emphasis here on both small and large organizations, though larger organizations tend to win more grants.

Grants for Women and Girls

The foundation’s grants for women focus on women’s reproductive health and STEM education - for now. It appears that the foundation is evolving it’s giving in this area, adding more interests. NARAL and Planned Parenthood are among recent grantees.

STEM grantees include various universities and colleges, such as Haverford College, Swarthmore, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel and Bryn Mawr College, among others. Grants have been clustering in the Northeast and invest in Women’s Science Fellowship Programs at the listed universities.

Important Grant Information:

Foundation-wide, grant amounts tend to range widely between $25,000 and $750,000. However, it generally makes global health grants in about the $50,000 range. In the U.S., grants appear roughly equally distributed across New York, D.C. and Pennsylvania, while global health grants are international, most often focusing on Africa.

Panaphil's history also reveals that it tends to support Last Mile Health, a global organization working to give those living in remote communities access to quality primary healthcare; and EngenderHealth, which works to improve the health and well-being of those living in the poorest communities in the world.

Panaphil does not accept unsolicited requests for funding or grant applications.
