PROFILE:  Founded in 1997, the Ong Family Foundation was established by financier Danny Ong Lee and his wife Stephanie. Lee is a Goldman Sachs veteran who went on to found Aktis Hanxi Group. The Ong Family Foundation has given more than $4 million to some 84 nonprofits, prioritizing the New York City area. The foundation "primarily seeks to fund programs that are comprehensive, community-based and preventive in nature" and focuses on areas such as social services, education, medicine & healthcare and arts & culture.

Grants range from $5,000 and up, but will not exceed $50,000 per year. Past grantees include Korean American Family Service Center, Central Queens Academy, APEX for Youth, YMCA of Greater New York-Chinatown Branch, and Chinese-American Planning Council. As a general rule, the foundation gives both one-year grants and multi-year grants of up to five years.

The application process begins with an LOI, and applicants should reach out to the staff. LOIs require a brief description of the organization, including its objectives; a statement of its needs and amount requested; proposed use of "proceeds of any grant or gift received from the Foundation"; as well as, a "proposed mode of acknowledgement or recognition of any grant or gift made by the Foundation."
