PROFILE: Established in 2008, the New Florida Majority (NewFM) is an independent organization that is has locations in Miami, Jacksonville and Fort Lauderdale. This is a left-wing group that relies on the strategies of mobilizing, educating and advocating. Gihan Perera founded the organization and was its executive director before the board of directors chose Andrea Cristina Mercado as Perera’s successor. NewFM aims to "increase the voting and political power of marginalized and excluded constituencies toward an inclusive, equitable and just Florida.” It funds local efforts for democracy, voter participation, living wage work, education, climate change, criminal justice, gender justice and disaster relief.
The New Florida Majority works with grassroots leaders to mobilize the vote, educate the public, and inspire Floridians to take action. It works to expand democracy by increasing voting access for people of color. Climate justice support involves advocating for climate change measures and providing direct services to Floridians after hurricanes. Criminal justice support involves defending immigrants and helping people who have been previously incarcerated. Gender justice grants help LGBTQ communities, nonconforming people and women. The New Florida Majority Education Fund is an affiliated racial justice organization that helps create a Florida that is more inclusive, just and equitable. It has a regional focus on North Florida (Duval County and Leon County) and South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach).
