PROFILE: The Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Baker Family Foundation was established in 1996. It was founded by real estate mogul Robert C. Baker. Baker is the founder, chairman, and CEO of National Realty & Development Corp (NRDC) in Purchase, New York, whose portfolio consists of some seventy-six shopping centers in sixteen states, as well as several office and industrial buildings. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Baker Family Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, the arts, Jewish causes, and health.
Earlier in the decade, Robert Baker and his wife Christina gave a $25 million gift to Yale Law School and established the Robert C. and Christina Baker Hall at Yale Law School. Baker also established the Nathan Baker Professorship of Law in honor of his father. Not only did Baker graduate from the school but his son Nathan and daughter Ashley are also Yale alums. Baker's brother Gerald graduated from Yale Law as well. Baker's wife, Christine, meanwhile is active in the arts world and serves on the board of Lincoln Center, the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, and the Guggenheim Museum International Council.
Grants range from $500 to $500,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.4 million. Past grantees include Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Lincoln Center, UJA Federation of New York, NYU Langone Medical Center, and Lenox Hill Hospital.
