Moreno Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Moreno Family Foundation Arizona grantmaking focuses on community organizations, youth, and more. The Morenos also fund scholarships for Hispanic students.

IP TAKE: The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals and keeps a very low-profile, as do its trustees. Networking with board and staff will be key here.

PROFILE: Established in 1998, the Moreno Family Foundation is based in Phoenix, Arizona. The owner, billionaire Arturo "Art" Moreno, sold his billboard advertising company Outdoor Systems for $8.7 billion in stock in 1999. He also owns commercial real estate in his home state of Arizona. He is also the owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and he was the first Mexican-American to own a major league sports team. Moreno and his wife, Carole, move their philanthropy through the Moreno Family Foundation, which gave a little over $3 million in a recently reported tax year. Grantmaking areas of interest include community, health, children, education, and arts and culture.

The foundation does not have a website to guide grant seekers. However, the Morenos, via their foundation, support community organizations in Arizona like UMOM New Day Centers, homeless shelters, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, YWCA Maricopa County, and American Legion Post. The Morenos also support women through Trends Charitable Fund. The family gives funds to health organizations, including the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The Morenos support youth and education organizations in Arizona, including the Boys and Girls Club of Scottsdale, Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, Friends of Crisis Nursery and the University of AZ Hispanic Scholarship. Additionally, the family supports local arts and culture institutions like the Arizona Science Center, Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix Symphony, and Queen Creek Performing Arts Center. The family has directed funds to local churches as well.

Of late, individual grants have rarely exceeded $30,000. Review the foundation’s recent tax records to learn more about its local giving. Some of the Morenos' philanthropy focuses on Southern California, but a good portion of their giving via their foundation supports Arizona, particularly the Greater Phoenix area.

The Moreno Family Foundation keeps a low profile and does not provide grant guidelines for nonprofits. It does not appear that this funder accepts unsolicited grant requests. The phone number for the foundation is 602-667-9500.
