Meadows Foundation: Grants for K-12 Education

PROFILE: The Meadows Foundation was founded in 1948 by Algur Meadows, a financier and former president of the General American Oil Company, and his wife, Virginia. Based in Dallas, Texas, the foundation “exists to assist people and institutions of Texas improve the quality and circumstances of life for themselves and future generations.” The foundation’s major funding initiatives prioritize the environment, mental health and education. It also funds programs in the areas of arts and culture, civic and public affairs, health and human services.

The broad goal of the Meadows Foundation’s education funding is to “improve the academic success of all public-school children in grades K-12.” The foundation has pursued this initiative through support of programs in early childhood education, early literacy, mathematics and teacher and administrator development. In 2008, the foundation provided support for the establishment of the Meadows Center for Preventing Academic Risk, a collaborative research project that supports the dissemination and implementation of research-based practices in various subject areas to classrooms across the U.S.

Meadows Foundation education grants range from $500 to $500,000 and support organizations of all sizes. The majority of the foundation’s grantees operate in Texas, and about one-half serve the greater Dallas area. Past grantees include Education Opens Doors, a Dallas organization that uses virtual programs to prepare middle school students for college success, and Teach Plus, which trains teachers in North Texas to advocate for effective educational policy.
