OVERVIEW: Mayo and Elizabeth Stuntz conduct their philanthropy through the Stuntz Family Foundation, which gave away around $460,000 in a recent year. The couple’s giving through their foundation focuses on the New York City area, including Westchester County. They support education, mental health and cancer research in particular.
BACKGROUND: Mayo S. Stuntz Jr. graduated from Cornell University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. Stuntz was executive vice president of Six Flags Theme Parks, COO of Century 21 Real Estate, and executive vice president of Quantum Media, among other positions. He went on to serve as executive vice president of AOL Time Warner, a position that followed his appointments as chief operating officer of AOL’s Interactive Services Group and president of CompuServe. He’s a founding member of Pilot Group LLC, a private investment firm, and an operating partner at Bessemer Venture Partners.
ISSUES:
HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Stuntz’s wife Elizabeth is a psychotherapist who is on the faculty of the Westchester Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. She developed and led coping skills programs for cancer patients and caregivers using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with the staff of Gilda’s Club Westchester, a free cancer support organization. The family have supported Gilda’s Club, as well as places like Ovarian Cancer Center Research Fund, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Robin Hood Foundation, Center For Discovery Treatment Centers, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Linehan Institute, which applies Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in mental health care.
WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY: The couple live in Westchester County and support a range of organizations in the community. Grantees have included Mamaroneck Schools Foundation, Mamaroneck Library, and Mamaroneck-Larchmont Student Aid Fund.
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Stuntz supports Tufts University and Harlem Children’s Zone.
OTHER: Stuntz serves as chair of New York Public Radio, which the couple steadily supports. He has been on the board of trustees for nearly a decade. Other grantees have included Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Support goes to Jewish organizations including Temple Beth El Cemetery and Congregation Kol Ami, a synagogue in Westchester.
