Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, the arts, health, and human services.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: The Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation was established in 1967. It was founded by the late James G. Wallach, chairman and chief executive of Central National-Gottesman Inc., a pulp, paper and newsprint marketing concern, and his wife Mary. Mary and her sons Andrew and Scott, continue to steer the vehicle. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, the arts, health, and human services.

A Met volunteer specializing in Japanese art since 1987, Mary Wallach donated $4 million in 2014 to endow the new position of Mary and James Wallach Family Conservator of Japanese Art. The family’s ties to the museum run deep: Mary’s late parents-in-law, Ira and Miriam Wallach, were benefactors and supporters of the Department of Asian Art.

Grants range from $300 to $1 million. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $2.5 million. Past grantees include The Met, New York Philharmonic, Central Park Conservancy, Rockefeller University, S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, Westchester Community College Foundation, and Trustees of Columbia University (Andrew is an alumnus).

The Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals.
