IP TAKE: The Kenworthy-Swift Foundation prioritizes mental health services for children and youth. A significant portion of grants go to organizations operating in the five boroughs of New York City. This funder does not support mental health research at this time.

This funder runs two annual grant application cycles with due dates on March 31 and October 31 of each year. Most grants are awarded in amounts of up to $25,000, but larger grants have been awarded on occasion.

PROFILE: The Marion E. Kenworthy-Sarah H. Swift Foundation was created by Marion Kenworthy and Sarah Swift in 1962. It seeks to “advance mental and emotional health of young people under age 21 by making grants to support innovative programs that advance the mental health of young people through social work, psychiatry, preventive psychiatry and community health.” The foundation supports programs operating in the areas of social work, psychiatry, preventative psychiatry and community mental health.

This funder’s “continuous” mission is to fund direct mental health services for children and youth. Within this overarching goal, however, the grantmaking prioritizes general operations support for organizations operating in New York City. At this time, the foundation does not support mental health research. Recent grants have supported New York City’s Association to Benefit Children, Brooklyn’s Center for Family Life in Sunset Park and the Door, a New York City organization that offers mental health services to at-risk youth.

Grants range from $5,000 to $45,000, with most between $10,000 and $25,000. The foundation does not have specific geographical restrictions for its funding, but it does give some preference to organizations located in the New York City tristate area. The foundation accepts unsolicited applications; submission deadlines fall on March 31 and October 31 of each year. Applications should be submitted electronically to Dr. Kathryn Conroy.
