PROFILE: In 1966, Jim Casey established the Casey Family Programs to reflect his interest in helping kids in long-term foster care in the Casey family’s hometown of Seattle, Washington. In 2001, the Casey Family Programs established the Marguerite Casey Foundation as a separate entity meant to continue its foster care work. Since then, the Marguerite Casey Foundation has expanded its work and supports “leaders, scholars and initiatives focused on shifting the balance of power in society.” The foundation supports LGBTQ causes across its Core Grantmaking, Impact Investment and Freedom Scholars funding programs.

Casey’s recent grants for LGBTQ organizations have prioritized grassroots and community-led groups in immigrant communities and communities of color. Recent grantees include Southerners on New Ground, Atlanta’s Solutions Not Punishment and the National LGBTQ Task Force.

This funder made about $30 million in grants in a recent year. Grants are generally awarded in amounts of up to $500,000, with grants of $1 million or more given in only a few cases. The average grant size is about $50,000. Casey tends to build ongoing relationships with its grantees, offering regular support over periods of several years. Grantees include small, grassroots organizations as well as much larger, national nonprofits.

The foundation does not accept or respond to unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding. Grantseekers may reach out with general inquiries via email or telephone at (206) 691-3134
