OVERVIEW: The Main Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) focuses its grantmaking on the expansion of quality healthcare access in Maine.

PROFILE: The Maine Health Access Foundation is a private health foundation that aims to improve health in the state of Maine through increased access, dialogue and collaboration between communities and providers. The foundation currently runs three grantmaking programs.

The Responsive Grants Program is the foundation’s largest giving initiative and makes grants that are “responsive to needs identified by people in communities across the state.” The program announces specific areas of focus early in the year and has recently funded projects in the areas of rural health, aging/older adults, behavioral health, and maternal and child health. The foundation’s Discretionary Grant Program supports “small, discrete, time-limited projects and activities” with grants small grants, often in the amount of $5,000. This funder also awards Meeting Support Program grants of up to $2,000 for community, regional or statewide conferences and meetings that address the foundation’s mission of improving and increasing access to healthcare in Maine. Applications are accepted at anytime through an online grant portal.

The Maine Health Access Foundation makes between $3 and $5 million in grants to Maine health organizations each year. Grants are generally awarded in amounts up to $500,000, with an average grant size of about $25,000. It funds a broad range of organizations, including large hospital and healthcare provider systems and much smaller community-based health and mental health organizations.
