Ludwick Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Ludwick Family Foundation assists a broad array of groups that are working to make a positive difference in the world.

IP TAKE: The foundation has a website, though it does not state its priority areas. Southern California, particularly its San Gabriel Valley near Los Angeles, serves as an important region of giving. It only considers invited proposals and does not support long-term projects.

PROFILE: Established in 1990, the Ludwick Family Foundation was established by Arthur and Sarah Ludwick, who are associated with Rain Bird Corporation, a family-owned company known for its iconic sprinkler and numerous other irrigation innovations. The Ludwick Family Foundation assists a broad array of groups that are working to make a positive difference in the world.

Though the foundation has a website, it does not state its priority areas. Its list of recent grant recipients suggests the foundation prioritizes education, health, human services, animals, cultural, and global organizations. The Ludwicks founded Arsalyn, a program of the foundation that was created to “encourage young Americans to become informed and active participants in the electoral process.” Arsalyn's Democracy in Action civic education project brings high school students trained by their teachers into elementary schools to teach students about democracy and voting. Citizens, Not Spectators, meanwhile is a partnership between Arsalyn and the Center for Civic Education aim to increase the voting rate among young Americans by providing engaging voter education to students in grades 4-12.

In a recent year, the foundation gave away $1.3 million. It made 16 grants over $5,000 Grantmaking focuses on Southern California, particularly the San Gabriel Valley outside of Los Angeles. Past local grantees include Glendora Unified School District, University of La Verne, Friends of Malibu Urgent Care Center, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), and A Purposeful Rescue.

The foundation only accepts applications by invitation only. It does not support organizations on a long-term basis. Grant consideration will be given only to those organizations that have been invited to submit formal proposals and that have completed the application process.
