OVERVIEW: The Lantos Foundation awards grants to both individuals and organizations working on the front lines of the global human rights.
IP TAKE: Lantos is an approachable funder. With its modest grant amounts, the foundation is a great resource for local and grassroots organizations.
PROFILE: Tom Lantos served as a member of U.S. Congress for nearly three decades. During that time and throughout his entire life, Lantos and his wife Annette fought for the “[h]uman rights and dignity of people in every corner of the world.” This commitment to human rights was born out of Tom and Annette's mutual experience as Holocaust survivors. The Lantos Foundation carries on its namesake’s human rights vocation through its Front Line Fund Grants program. The program awards what it calls small grants to both individuals and organizations that “[f]ight against injustices around the world.” Awards are also given in the form of scholarships.
The foundation currently prioritizes grants that support religious freedom, Global Citizenship, and rule of law; however, it encourages individuals and organizations in human rights fields to submit grant applications, as well. Lantos offers small grants between $500 and $2,500, but on occasion, awards grants for about $50,000 to large human rights groups. The Lantos Foundation does not apply geographic restrictions to its human rights grantmaking, and accepts unsolicited applications on a rolling basis.
