PROFILE: Established in 1994, the Kendal C. and Anna Ham Charitable Foundation is the private foundation of Kendal and Anna Ham, who had no children together and decided that their estates would support charities. Kendal Ham passed in 1988, Anna in 1996. The foundation is based in North Conway, New Hampshire. The foundation seeks “to improve the quality of life for people living in the Mount Washington Valley, New Hampshire and the Bridgton and Fryeburg, Maine communities.” Grantmaking areas of interest include human services, domestic violence, the elderly, recreation, housing, environment, health, children and youth, museums, libraries, and more.

The Ham Charitable Foundation has been awarding grants in the region since it was founded 1994. Anna Ham, who originally served as the foundation’s director, ultimately decided to support local needs rather than large national charities. During their lifetimes, the foundation was mostly focused on charities that support human services. However, the foundation does not limit itself to specific interest areas, and funds local nonprofits broadly today.

In a recent year, the foundation awarded $566,978 in contributions, gifts and grants paid. View a list of past grant recipients on the funder’s website. The foundation restricts grantmaking to the Mount Washington Valley in New Hampshire and the Maine communities of Bridgton and Fryeburg. These are the places where the founding couple lived and spent many years. Grants are typically made for one year and do not go toward annual operating support, conferences, private or parochial schools, or religious organizations.

The Ham Charitable Foundation accepts grant applications from local nonprofits. Submit new applications by the last working day of January for April consideration, or by the last working day of July for October consideration. Nonprofits must submit applications via mail to the funder’s P.O. box. Direct general questions to the foundation’s executive director, Robert Murphy, at 603-356-3389 or thcf@roadrunner.com.
