JSJN Children’s Charitable Trust

OVERVIEW: The JSJN Children’s Charitable Trust primarily funds grantmaking related to children, youth, and educational causes. The foundation also earmarks funds for health and arts organizations.

FOCUS AREAS: Education, youth, health, arts

IP TAKE: The foundation lacks transparency, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: Established in 1988, the JSJN Children’s Charitable Trust was founded by Bain Capital Co-Chair Stephen Pagliuca. His wife, Judy, is the managing partner of Pagsgroup, where she invests in startup companies in the Boston area. Stephen Pagliuca serves as the global head of Bain Capital Private Equity’s technology, media, and telecommunications vertical and financial services vertical. He's also a co-owner of the Boston Celtics. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the JSJN Children’s Charitable Trust grantmaking prioritizes children, youth, and educational causes. The foundation also earmarks funds for health and arts organizations.

Stephen Pagliuca is president of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, whose mission is to "extend the reach of the Celtics championship legacy into the community through programs that directly benefit children in need." The family supports the charity via their foundation. Pagliuca is chairman emeritus of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), another grantee. Stephen and Judy Pagliuca have also supported their mutual alma mater, Harvard Business School. HBS also houses the Pagliuca Harvard Life Lab, a wet laboratory with co-working space for early-stage, high-potential biotech and life science start-ups founded by Harvard students, alumni, faculty, and postdoctoral scholars.
