Jerome and Lorraine Aresty Charitable Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Jerome and Lorraine Aresty Charitable Foundation funds grantmaking related to national conservation, as well as local conservation organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation lacks transparency, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. The intermountain west serves as a region of giving.

PROFILE:  The Jerome and Lorraine Aresty Charitable Foundation was established in 2003. It was established by the late apparel mogul Jerome Aresty, who steered womens’ clothing manufacturer Alfred Dunner, and his wife Lorraine. The foundation is currently steered by the couple’s son Jim, an investor based in Aspen and St. Petersburg, Florida. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. According to tax filings, the Jerome and Lorraine Aresty Charitable Foundation’s environmental grantmaking appears to focus on national conservation, as well as local organizations.

Jim Aresty founded Open Partnership Education Network (OPEN), an open-source publishing platform that brings together people to share ideas around themes that matter to a community. Themes have included SEEDS (urban agriculture), Future Cities, and Wellness and Radical Schools. The foundation does not have a formal environmental grantmaking program. It also funds Jewish causes and community organizations. The late Jerome and Lorraine were major patrons of Rutgers University.

Grants range from $1,000 to $250,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.4 million. Past grantees include Conservation International, Earth Justice, Environmental Defense Fund, League of Conservation Voters, National Park Trust, World Wildlife Fund, Aspen Valley Land Trust, Conservation Colorado Education Fund, and Western Resources Advocates.
