IP TAKE: Submit a request for capital funding to this Southeast-focused foundation, especially organizations with Christian roots.

PROFILE: Established in 1940, the J. Bulow Campbell Foundation is the foundation of an Atlanta businessman, civic leader and philanthropist. He was committed to teachings of the Christian faith, with a reputation as modest and frugal. He was the head of the Campbell Coal Company, he was a director of the Coca-Cola Company and the Trust Company of Georgia, and he passed away in 1940 at the age of 69. Grantmaking areas of interest are community, education, youth, public spaces, cultural amenities and Christian concerns.

The Campbell Foundation prioritizes larger grants to a few organizations rather than grassroots organizations. It also prefers to support groups that have already secured other significant sources of funding. Campbell often supports Christian-based institutions, especially with regard to education. However, it does not fund general operating support, start-up funding, seed money, individual church congregations, festivals, films, or financial aid for education. This is a private foundation that does not seek publicity or publish news about its grant awards.

Foundation grants range from $100,000 to $1 million. Learn more about the foundation’s recent giving by examining its tax records. Grantmaking is almost exclusive to the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia. However, the foundation will also consider making grants to the other five states surrounding Georgia: Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. In general, the foundation provides capital funding much more frequently than program or operating support.

Campbell accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry from local nonprofits. There are no formal application forms, and initial letters are limited to one page. The board meets quarterly in January, April, July and October to review requests. For general questions, contact the foundation staff at 404-658-9066.
