Hope and Heal Fund

OVERVIEW: The Hope and Heal Fund takes a community-based approach to preventing gun violence in California.

FUNDING AREAS: Gun Violence, Public Health, Racial Equity, Community Development

IP TAKE: This is a good funder to know for California nonprofits whose work in any way relates to gun violence.

PROFILE: Created in 2016 in response to the San Bernardino shooting from the previous year, the Hope and Heal Fund works to curb gun violence. It seeks to “harness the collective power of individuals, communities, corporate leaders, government and philanthropy to ensure that homes and communities in California are safe and free from death, injury and trauma caused by gun violence.” The fund supports programs that promote gun violence prevention efforts and address the underlying social conditions that cause it.

The Hope and Heal Fund’s approach to gun violence prevention supports “innovative and proven solutions that not only promote gun violence prevention efforts, but can be replicated, tested and implemented in communities across California.”

Since its founding, the fund has made over $1 million in grants to prevent gun violence. Past grantees include Akonadi Foundation, The California Endowment, The Rosenberg Foundation, and The California Wellness Foundation. Grant seekers can see a more complete list of previous grantees here.

To complement its gun violence prevention efforts, the fund established a COVID-19 Violence Prevention Emergency & Sustainability Fund to support “frontline workers and organizations working to prevent gun violence during this pandemic,” and to “ensure that […] vital community organizations survive the economic downturn caused by the virus.”

Hope and Heal does not accept unsolicited LOIs or proposals; however, it does invite Grant seekers to contact the fund to introduce themselves via an online form. Grant seekers can also contact the fund with general questions here.
