PROFILE: Established in 1940, the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is dedicated to improving mental health in Texas. It is based in Austin, Texas, and was established by the children of Texas Governor James Hogg. An initial $2.5 million endowment came from Will C. Hogg’s estate, the eldest of Governor Hogg’s children. The foundation aims to “Transform how communities promote mental health in everyday life.”
Grants for Mental Health
A majority of Hogg grants are awarded through a competitive request for proposals. In the realm of mental health, Hogg supports programs and services, policy analysis, research, and public education. Specific interests include enhancing public policy and improving the mental health workforce. Hogg also supports efforts to impact consumers and youth and families. Hogg provides resources for finding services, healthcare consumers, public awareness, and credible news sources. Scholarships and fellowships are awarded. Other Hogg activities include hosting a free biennial children’s mental health conference, faith-based outreach and education, public policy work, director seminars, and raising awareness about trauma-informed care. There are no grant programs dedicated to substance use disorders. It also does not fund intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as Alzheimer’s, autism, and mental retardation.

Only Texas-based nonprofits are eligible for nearly all Hogg grants, but there are opportunities here for state and local government agencies, universities, mental health organizations, and social service groups.
The foundation does not typically accept unsolicited grant proposals but rather issues RFPs for specific programs. Open requests for proposals are listed here. Each time a new RFP is announced, the foundation usually posts a “questions and answers” section to address concerns about that particular grant opportunity.
