Hermione Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Hermione Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to the arts, education, youth, health, and human services.

IP TAKE: The foundation lacks transparency, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: The Hermione Foundation was established in 1992. It was founded by finance veteran Laura J. Sloate. Laura cofounded investment management firm Sloate Weisman, where she was chairwoman, treasurer, CIO, and director of research. The foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Hermione Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to the arts, education, youth, health, and human services.

Laura Sloate has been a managing director of Metropolitan Opera Association and appears to have a particular interest in opera and music. She's steadily supported The Met Opera. Sloate has been blind since the age of six and moves around with a guide dog. She's supported The Seeing Eye, a guide dog school located in New Jersey.

Grants range from $100 to around $423,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away approximately $901,000. Past grantees include 92nd Street Y, Artists Space, Carnegie Hall Society, The Met, Barnard College (Laura's alma mater), Breakthrough New York, and Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

While the Hermione Foundation keeps a low-profile, a recent tax return suggested that the foundation does accept proposals. Applicants should be begin by calling for an information questionnaire.
