PROFILE: Established in 1994, the Hannaford Charitable Foundation (HCF) is the corporate foundation of Hannaford Supermarkets. Based in Maine, the supermarket chain formed the foundation to expand its charitable giving and support local nonprofits in New England. The supermarket dates back to 1883 when Arthur Hannaford sold fruits and vegetables from a produce cart on the waterfront in Portland, Maine. The foundation aims to “invest in creating and sustaining healthy communities in the five-state area of our business.” Grantmaking includes food, education, and health.
The HCF focuses on building healthy communities in the areas where the supermarket operates. It gives through grants, a scholarship program, in-store promotions, local community events, sponsorships, and United Way support. Food-related grants support providing stable and safe access to healthy food, especially through regional food banks. Education grants go towards programs that promote educational at all ages and workforce readiness. Finally, health grants focus on improved care and healthy lifestyle programs.
HCF grants range from $5,000 to $50,000. Past grantees include the Maine Community College Foundation, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Vermont. The foundation restricts grants to organizations in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. This foundation does not provide funding for public or private K-12 schools, operating budgets, private foundations, individuals, or religious and political causes.
