Venturous Theater Fund: Grants for Theater

OVERVIEW:  Venturous supports theater artists and organizations that employ directors, designers and actors. The fund provides grants to playwright collectives, self-produced writers, and playwright service organizations.

IP TAKE: Venturous takes risks in its grantmaking. This makes it a great funder for small and mid-sized organizations.

PROFILE: Established in 2012, the Venturous Fund seeks to “fund ambitious and challenging work by creating room for experimentation and risk in new play production.” The fund also seeks to give writers the freedom to write plays “they fear would otherwise go unproduced.” Venturous provides direct support to artists as well as organizations that employ directors, designers, and actors. The fund also supports playwright collectives, self-produced writers, and playwright service organizations.

Venturous awards theater grants through its Capital Grants program. It does not offer grants for musicals, musical productions, or plays for children. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000, and are typically earmarked to cover what the fund refers to as “extraordinary production expenses for new plays.” In other words, Venturous covers the extra expenses that improve a production, but which the theater cannot afford.

While the Venturous Fund is a private foundation, its grants are disbursed through a donor-advised fund at the Tides Foundation. Regardless, the fund does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
