PROFILE: Established in 1984, the Foundation for Seacoast Health (FSH) is a private foundation that was created from the proceeds of the sale of Portsmouth Hospital to Hospital Corporation America. Based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, FSH awards grants and scholarships related to health. FSH aims to invest “resources to improve the health and wellbeing of Seacoast residents.” Major grantmaking interests include health promotion, health protection, preventive health services, and health training and education.

All FSH grantmaking centers on improving the health of the communities in its service area. One example grantee is Families First of the Greater Seacoast. The foundation also offers workforce development grants to help healthcare and social services organizations fund trainings for staff. This opportunity is often reserved for organizations within health fields that are experiencing workforce shortages.

Past grants have been in the $200,000 range. However, workforce development grants are up to $2,500 each. The foundation lists past grantees on its grant impact page. There are nine communities that FSH funds with its grantmaking. These are the New Hampshire communities of Portsmouth, Newington, New Castle, Greenland, Rye and North Hampton, as well as the communities of Kittery, Eliot and York in Maine. The foundation has also developed the Community Campus, which is a nonprofit, multi-tenant center that is used by community organizations and to provide services to vulnerable and underserved residents.

FSH accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits and provides its application forms online. Direct general question to the foundation staff at 603-422-8200 or fsh@communitycampus.org.
