PROFILE: Henri Landwirth established the Fanny Landwirth Foundation in 1982 and named it after his mother. His original intention was to “help ensure that the pain and agony of the innocent victims of the Holocaust is never forgotten.” He and his family were prisoners in the Nazi death camps during World War II, and although neither of his parents survived, he and his sister did and were later reunited. He arrived in New York City on a freight ship with $20 in his pocket, and ultimately made his fortune in the hotel industry over a 50-year career. After Henri’s death in 2018, the foundation was converted into endowed funds at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina in Asheville, NC.
Henri Landwirth is best known for creating the Give Kids the World Village, which has been giving low-cost experiences to kids with life-threatening illnesses since 1989. He also established a nonprofit called Dignity U Wear in 2000 to provide brand new clothing for children, veterans, and women and girls in need.
The Henri Landwirth Family Endowed Funds will support many of the same causes that Henri championed through the Fanny Landwirth Foundation: “safety-net services; Jewish causes; Holocaust remembrance and awareness program; efforts to reduce prejudice, bigotry, and hate; programs addressing elder care; and programs that provide comfort, solace, joy and respite to individuals with disabilities, serious, chronic or life-threatening illnesses and their families.”
