Crail-Johnson Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Crail-Johnson Foundation limits most of its philanthropy to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Its grantmaking includes education, human services, and health. This foundation also supports disadvantaged youth in Los Angeles.

IP TAKE: Crail-Johnson is a generous funder of youth organizations in Los Angeles. While it makes some grants beyond Southern California, its grantmaking prioritizes Los Angeles.

PROFILE: Founded in 1987 and based in San Pedro, California, the Crail-Johnson Foundation exists to help local children in need. It seeks “to promote the well-being of children in need, through the effective application of human and financial resources.” Funding topics include education, human services, and health.

The foundation divides its education funding into several different topics: early childhood development, literacy programs, parent engagement and education, STEM education, youth development, school-to-career, and college preparatory programs for urban high school students.

Crail-Johnson also offers human services grants to groups that assist local residents with child abuse and domestic violence prevention and treatment, homelessness, food banks, and youth development and enrichment. In contrast, health grants support treatment and prevention services sponsored mostly by community-based clinics and school health centers.

Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000. Applicants may explore its grantee list for further insight; however, the foundation supports both well-established and grassroots groups. Geographically, the foundation prioritizes San Pedro, Wilmington, Compton, Watts, Carson, Long Beach, and South Los Angeles. This is a funder that provides both general operating support and support for direct services related to specific programs. However, it rarely funds multi-year requests.  Past grantees include Boys and Girls clubs, Harbor Community Clinic, LA Partnership for Early Childhood Investment, and Port of Los Angeles High School.

To apply for a foundation grant, applicants must submit a letter of inquiry between September 1 and September 30 for education or between December 15 to January 15 for human services. The online application can be accessed from the funder’s website. The health grant cycle accepts applications by invitation only. Contact the foundation with general questions at 310-519-7413 or via online form.
