PROFILE: Established in the 1970s, the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes (CFECFL) is a community foundation based in Horseheads, New York. The funder assumed its current name in 1993 after merging the Community Foundation of Chemung County Area and the Corning Community Foundation. Today, it is led by community-based, volunteer board of directors and administered professional staff members. CFECFL prides itself on being the “only foundation in the area that looks at the holistic needs in the community, including education, arts, infrastructure, animals, the environment and wellness.”

The Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes offers multiple grant opportunities for local nonprofits, and it also offers initiatives, trainings, and resources for nonprofits. Community grants address numerous topics, while mini-grants are designated for critical, urgent needs. CFECFL administers the Fund for Women Grants, a Grants for the Environment fund, the Keuka Area Fund, the Rose’s Youth Philanthropists fund, Elmo M. Royce Youth Fund and Camperships, Edith Saxton Fund for Steuben County Youth Services, and Schuyler County Fund. Each of these funds has a different set of guidelines and award amounts.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $20,000 for community grants. Mini-grants are up to $1,000 each. Learn more about this funder’s local giving in the funder’s blog. Grantmaking focuses on Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties in the Southern Tier of New York State. Past local grantees include Catholic Charities of Chemung-Schuyler, Common Time Choral Group, Corning Community Food Pantry, and Finger Lakes Land Trust.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. CFECFL uses an online application system to receive and review requests. The letter of inquiry deadline for community grants is typically around September 1, while the funder accepts mini-grant requests on a rolling basis.
