PROFILE: The Community Foundation of Broward (CFB) is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is the community funder for the area. It seeks to “provide leadership on community solutions, and foster philanthropy that connects people who care with causes that matter.” Dating back to 1984, this was one of the first community foundations to be established in Florida. Libby and Jack Deinhardt founded CFB, which now has over $197 million in assets.
CFB serves 31 cities in Broward County, Florida, a place with residents from at least 166 countries, who speak more than 50 languages. Over the past few years, CFB has largely supported 10 issue areas and plans to continue supporting these areas in the near future. These issues are animal welfare, art for the community, obesity in youth and adults, LGBTQ issues, cancer research and treatment, environmental stewardship, economic independence, dignity in aging, high school graduation rates, and youth employment. CFB has also supported HIV/AIDS prevention, foster youth transition, and efforts to engage retirees in their community.
Each of these issue areas has its own set of deadlines and guidelines, so check the specific issue page for current dates and details. Some goals of CFB include updating systems to meet the needs of the elderly, increasing high school graduation rates to 90 percent, preparing youth for adult full-time work, and enhancing care for both wild and domestic animals in the region. Many of the grants reach $100,000. The 10 issues here are part of a record $9.2 million investment in the most pressing community challenges in Broward County.
