OVERVIEW: The Colorado Health Foundation supports health equity for all Coloadoans.

IP TAKE: The Colorado Health Foundation is an important source of funding for Colorado health organizations of all sizes. Current priorities include the expansion of primary healthcare services, children’s exercise programs, social-emotional development, substance abuse prevention and recovery, community-based health initiatives, advocacy and policy development. Colorado grantseekers should contact an appropriate program officer to discuss grantmaking opportunities. Recent grants have been awarded in amounts ranging from $10,000 to over $3 million, and the foundation gives away about $100 million a year.

PROFILE: The Colorado Health Foundation maintains the broad goal of improving the health of Coloradoans so that every person living in the state can say “We have all we need to live healthy lives.” The foundation’s grantmaking program supports “impactful work that helps Coloradoans live their healthiest lives by advancing opportunities to pursue good health and achieve health equity. Its current areas of grantmaking are:

Maintain Healthy Bodies aims to support Colorardo initiatives to expand access to high-quality primary care services and to provide children with safe and fun opportunities to exercise every day.

Nurture Healthy Minds invests in efforts to enhance the social-emotional development of young children, the resiliency of youth and the recovery of adults experiencing substance abuse issues.

Strengthen Community Health grants focus on community-level health equity by investing in local initiatives for health solutions, food security and affordable housing.

Champion Health Equity grantmaking supports individuals and organizations that advocate for local- and state-level health equity.

The Colorado Health Foundation made about $100 million in grants in a recent year, including several grants of over $1 million. The foundation’s average grant size is about $75,000, and its grants have gone to large, state-level research and policy development initiatives as well as much smaller, community-led health organizations. Grantmaking is mainly limited to Colorado. Recent grantees include Denver’s Family Resource Association, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Caring For Colorado Foundation, the Center for African American Health and the East Phillips County Hospital Association.
