Child Neurology Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Child Neurology Foundation supports research in child neurology by medial students and early-career researchers.

IP TAKE: The Child Neurology Foundation runs two awards programs for early-career researchers working in the field of child neurology with two-year grants of $100,000. Its scholarship programs for medical student research are awarded in amounts of less than $5,000. Each program runs a separate application program, but due dates tend to fall in ‘April of each year.

PROFILE: The Child Neurology Foundation was established in 2001 by one of the country’s first pediatric neurologists, Dr. Kenneth Swaiman. The foundation is an outgrowth of Swaiman’s Child Neurology Society, which he founded in the early 1970s as a “collaborative center of education and support for caregivers and their children with neurological conditions.” Now it “connects partners from all areas of the child neurology community so those navigating the journey of disease diagnosis, management, and care have the ongoing support of those dedicated to treatments and cures.” The CNF has a number of initiatives aimed at public awareness, support for families, conferences and seminars, and research grants.

CNF’s Research Grants have awarded “over 3.5 million dollars to the research endeavors of over 70 young investigators, aimed at identifying treatments and cures for pediatric neurologic diseases.” The foundation currently runs four programs:

The Kenneth F. Swaiman Medical Student Scholarship program awards three $5,000 summer scholarships to second- or third-year medical students “for a basic or clinical research project in child neurology conducted under the direction of a child neurologist.”

The Child Neurology Foundation Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Summer Research Scholarship is an award of $3,500 for a first- or second-year medical student for “clincial research focused in the field of neurodevelpmental disabilities in children.”

The PERF Elterman Research Grant and PERF Shields Research Grant programs are supported by the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation and support early-career child neurologists or developmental pediatricians who are members of the Child Neurology Society and pursuing basic or clinical research with $100,000 grants.

The Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award supports “basic science or clinical research by promising young investigators who are members of the Child Neurology Society.” Awardees receive a grant of $30,000 and an opportunity to make a presentation at CNF’s annual conference.

The Child Neurology Foundation makes about $125,000 in grants each year. Research grants and scholarships are awarded in specific amounts as dictated by individual funding programs. For information about recent recipients, see the foundation’s recent annual report.

This funder accepts applications for each of its funding programs. Application guidelines vary by program, but due dates generally fall in April. For inquiries, email the foundation’s operations manager, Allyson Eyermann.
